SYNOPSIS: The Way to Treasure Island

This funny, adventure-packed story teaches children that even though people are different, they can still have fun together.

Summary

Matilda and her dad are complete opposites. While she is fast, tidy, and quiet, her dad is easily distracted, messy, and oh, so noisy. The two obviously love each other, but matters come to a head when they decide to go in search of some treasure.

The Good

This book made me so happy. Matilda is a serious young girl with a dad who’s so obviously a child at heart. The story’s simultaneous plausibility and the near-fantastical search for treasure create a delightful combination. Other things I loved about The Way to Treasure Island:

  • The illustrations(!!!). This picture book has a cute, yet modern illustration style. The illustrator (and writer) Lizzy Stewart is certainly talented.
  • The font. I know that’s a weird thing to like about a book, but font/type really matters to me. It impacts my reading experience, for novels and picture books — but especially the latter. The font in this one is highly readable and complements the images.
  • The entire concept. People are different, from personality quirks to the way they process the world. The Way to Treasure Island makes the case for not only tolerating these differences but cherishing them.
