Bite-Sized Review: STEALING HOME

Summary: Stealing Home

Ryan is an ambitious teenager who helps her dad out with managing a minor league baseball team. But when their latest recruit, baseball prodigy Sawyer Campbell shows up, things get a bit complicated. Worse still, Ryan’s parents divorce leads to her mom wanting selling her share of the team. This essentially jeopardizes Ryan’s dream of someday becoming team General Manager. So, she joins forces with Sawyer to land some team sponsors that may help her keep her dream.

I enjoyed this book. Although I was a bit worried I wouldn’t because I neither understand nor like baseball, it wasn’t a bad experience. That’s possibly because the crux of this book is Sawyer and Ryan’s relationship, not baseball. There’s also some mildly entertaining family drama with Ryan’s parents and an abundance of musings on identity and chasing dreams.

I liked Ryan’s character and the way the author tackles the sexism Ryan faces in her bid to save the team. You also can’t help but enjoy watching her and Sawyer form a friendship and eventually a relationship. Still, this book is one of the lighter young adult novels (nothing wrong with that). Many characters are under-explored and besides the romance, not much else is particularly memorable. Still, the target audience will love it.

Overall

Stealing Home is a cute young adult romance with a touch of baseball, a sweet female friendship, and entertaining family drama. This novel is a perfect beach read and a great pick for anyone who loves an enterprising young heroine.
